MY WEDDING RING
My wedding ring is a simple gold band that hasn’t been off my finger in many, many years. The only time I remember it coming off in the past 10 years is when it broke in half and I had to have it fixed.

When you look at it closely, you won’t see any diamonds or engraving. What you will see up close are nicks, scrapes and dings. Those nicks, scrapes and dings symbolize the joy and pain of our marriage, the years gone by, the struggles, the hopes, dreams and promises. It may look good when it’s clean and polished, but it looks more like nearly 19 years of marriage when it’s not.

The simple band of gold, presented to me by my wife on our wedding day, represents so much more than a ceremony of marriage or vows of faith and commitment. My ring symbolizes our family, at first just Lea and I, two young kids in love. Then came the children and all the trials and tribulations that marriages and families endure and somehow survive.

My ring reminds me I can hold her hand or touch her anytime, because she is mine. It reminds me that we’re a team and that we work better together than apart. And, it reminds me that I’m totally committed to her and she’s committed to me.

Sorry, but the title of "luckiest man in the world" already belongs to me.

BUT, I guess I can adjust my title to "luckiest man in my world" and just let you be from another planet, which is very appropriate if you think you are luckier than me.

All in jest, Trey. Very good post.

I love the balance in your blog. You are willing to laugh at your silly comments (and broom buying) for your wife and yet you still can tug at the heart strings when proclaiming your commitment to her. That was really a wonderful post!

Hey Trey, thanks for the e-mail, and the prayer your prayed for us yesterday.

I hope very much my wedding will actually last 19 years. It's silver, so it gets dinged up more than gold. I bought in Mexico City (where Katie was an AIMer) for seven bucks. The engraving here in the states cost more than the ring.

It definitely hold much sentimental value, I just hope it passes the test of time. :o)

Chris ... I like your spirit and your words about your wife.

Monica ... thanks ... you know Lea & I well enough to know that I "married up." God was good to me. :)

Great post, Trey. I'm sure Lea considers herself pretty lucky too. :)

The way you made your wife feel with this post.....more than priceless I a sure! (unless you were in the doghouse trying to score points???)

Donna ... maybe the dog house was from yesterday's "broom" post. ha

I had a similar thought about the doghouse. Maybe I just know where I land myself.

Your thougths are a great reminder. I was thinking about my ring a couple of days age. When we married Kathy gave me an expensive ring. It was cut with a certain amount of etching that made it sparkle. It was thick and heavy. It would last a lifetime. About five and a half years ago it was stolen. I was extremely disapointed. Long story short after two more rings in less time than that, we purchased a $40 ring.

I remember when I was in school at Sunset, Daryl and I were visiting and I noticed his ring and he couldn't really take it off. I remember the callous that had built up around it. I mention this to say I have only taken my ring off my finger maybe three times in five years. I wear it all the time. I have developed that same kind of a callous on my finger. My old ring was nice. I took it off when I was called home from work to deal with a plumbing crisis. I did not want to get that muck all over my nice ring. The first ring was great and I sometimes wish I still had it but as time goes by I realize it was too nice for the real world of marriage. The last couple of weeks I have had to deal with plumbing problems and other messes but the ring stayed. When I face the messes of life whatever they are the ring is there to remind me of us being in it together.

Trey Maybe I should have just posted this on my blog but it fits here.

My sweet husband took my first wedding ring to be shined up and checked out shortly after the birth of one of our kids. Unfortunately, it returned with a crack in one of the diamonds and other problems that were not there before. We didn't have the money to fix it so I bought one for $40 at a pawn shop. It has five small diamonds, one for each of us and a simple gold band. It means so much to me. It was appraised for over $400 so it was also a good deal. One day, I would like to get my original fancy ring fixed, but for now I appreciate the simplicity and sentiment of this ring. In some ways it means more to me than the original because it combines memories, hardships, and accomplishments of our first 10+ years of marriage.

Trey,
You are good brother. As I sit here and look at my ring, I am reminded of the many ups and downs (more ups!) that our marriage has faced. Thank you for the new found appreciation of my own band.

I am lucky too.

So, is she though :-)

Brian,

That's exactly what crashed the last marriage I counseled. Stinking hamburger meat!

Outstanding post!

I think there a lot of us "luckiest guys in the world"!

Praise God!

Ha. I take mine off for hamburger meat and bread dough and other things. But I keep a good eye on it the whole time. Though it's just a small rock embedded in a piece of metal, and it won't follow me to the next life, it does mean a lot symbolically, and I cherish it. It's nice to know guys feel the same way about their rings. :)

Another great post Trey.

Cherish wearing those rings guys and gals. I wore one for over 17 years and suddenly 10 days before my wife's 44th birthday she went to heaven.

Many months after I buried my sweetheart I finally was able to take that ring off my finger, and still it broke my heart all over again.

By God's loving mercy, now I wear another. For just over 8 years I proudly have worn the ring given to me by my best friend, answer to prayer, loving wife, and partner in ministry. I hope to leave planet earth still wearing it.

Cherish wearing the ring, it is the emblem of one of God's choicest gifts on earth.

Grace to you,
Royce Ogle

Hey Trey,

I don't have anything insightful to add, but I wanted to say that I'll be in McLean on Saturday for a funeral; I'll be thinking about all my Panhandle friends.

Grace and peace,
Tim

Inside Ned's ring it says "Psalm 37:4--heart's desire"---Mine says "James 1:17, good and perfect gift"----But our hearts say so much more. God is good to us and the blessing of each other is so much more than we deserve--
eternally grateful
