THE PORN MYTH

"In the end, porn doesn’t whet men’s appetites—it turns them off the real thing."

"People are not closer because of porn but further apart."

"For most of human history, erotic images have been reflections of, or celebrations of, or substitutes for, real naked women. For the first time in human history, the images’ power and allure have supplanted that of real naked women. Today, real naked women are just bad porn."

The above quotes are from a secular article called "The Porn Myth" that ran in N.Y. Magazine this week. I find it sad that our secular society is just now figuring out what the Christian community has been preaching for years ... the dangers of pornography and the negative effects it has on both men, women, married and unmarried.

I found the story at the end of the article jaw dropping and amazing all at the same time. Feel free to read the article, but understand it probably needs a PG-13 rating. Also for more on pornography, pornography statics, pornography addiction and the evil grip it has on people ... you can read this: "Free Porn or Porn Free."

Thank you for mentioning this article and giving the links, Trey.

I'd have to say that much of the "Christian" anti-porn messages I've heard through the years followed the pattern of "It's Bad. Stay Away From It." Never anything nuanced or in a larger framework of God's intention. Sometimes porn would be included in a pulpit vice list. That was about it.

Until they attend their first Brecheen and Faulkner seminar, or hear Joe Beam, most members of the Church of Christ don't get to hear Christians say something positive and downright theological about sex.

Is that starting to change?

Frank ... I pray that it's changing. It may be slowly, but I see it happening ... finally.

Thanks for the article and the links for more information. Its about time someone began addressing this issue. Thanks Trey for addressing it in a biblical context.

I just wanted to add an article from World Magazine which puts some of the blame on our own church culture among evangelical youth and their sexual practice. Its an article worth reading. Here is the link: http://www.worldmag.com/articles/13208. It holds some sobering thoughts to consider.

I can only pray that God will work in the hearts of our youth so that they will become a new generation of sexually moral men and women of God, and bring back our nation to godly principles concerning sex and pornography.

Thanks again Trey and God Bless.

Very timely post. Almost gutsy for a coC guy to post! I've sat in Joe Beam's classes at Pepperdine and watched his audience almost go into cardiac arrest with his teaching on numerous subjects, including sexuality. We need to open our eyes to the real world all around us and respond as ambassadors of Christ. Thanks for this blog, Trey!

Hey. That was a really interesting article...where did you find that? :o) I love that you cover this stuff. Too many people don't. Love your blog. Listened to one of your sermons before church this morning. Especially good for Katie because she can't understand the sermons here yet.

Trey,
Excellent post brother. I went to a love, sex and marriage seminar at NCYM when I was a youth minister that Joe Beam put on and it was great. The question he dealt with about sex and marriage and how God wanted Christians to enjoy it. Agian, great post.
