I DON'T LIKE ME WHEN I'M ANGRY
I've been asked before, "Trey, what gets you angry?" My response is always the same, "Nothing really. I don't have a problem with getting angry." That was until recently...

It was about 5:00 in the morning. Although it was dark, my buddy Randy and I were running on a street that was pretty well lit. About two miles into our run we came to an intersection where we had the right of way. Generally we don't see any cars, but that morning we both notice a vehicle pulling up to the intersection.

"I don't think he's going to stop," Randy said.

"Yea, he'll stop," I said, as we ran right out into the intersection.

About 2 seconds later I found myself upon the hood of a pickup, beating it with my fists so he'd stop and not finish me off. I was dazed and a little confused about what had just happened. Instantly a feeling of fear swept over me, followed by an amazing amount of anger.

The man immediately threw on his breaks and stopped. From his window I heard him say, "I'm so sorry I didn't see you." I remember that his voice sounded scared.

Heart racing about a thousand beats a minute and still very angry, I yelled, "BUT DID YOU NOT SEE THE BIG RED STOP SIGN?!? My tone was very harsh, my words were sharp and I was still angry.

Randy said, "You alright?"

"Yea, I think so," I said, as I was trying to calm down and check myself out.

We started to run again and the guy in the pickup yelled apologetically, "Are you alright?"

I hollered back, as we ran off down the street, in a little kinder tone, "It's okay, I'm fine."

Because of the darkness, I have no clue who he was. I honestly felt really bad that I raised my voice and was short with him. I also know that I was scared, and what I did was a natural response to a scary situation. That's how God made us when we're put in a situation like that.

I still don't like that out-of-control angry feeling I felt, and I'm SO thankful that I really don't have a problem controlling my anger .... unless of course, you RUN ME OVER!

trey, you made me laugh so hard just now. But I do agree with you. It takes a lot to make me angry, and I can definitely see that would be one.

You had every right to be angry,Trey. You could have been killed. Thank you for sharing your experience. Praise Jesus, you are still alive and not hurt.

So we should be safe doing anything less? Good to know.

I'm glad I don't have an anger issue either. But, I did run someone over. Before you call the CSI, allow me to explain. I was in Ghana, Africa coasting down a long hill to the well where my friends were getting water. I was on my bicycle and a man stepped out from behind a car parked along the street. Wham! Right between the legs went my bike tire. I've never in all my life felt so bad. And now I feel bad again, because I'm sure he is still holding ice to his ......... you know.

Glad your ok Might the dad in me ask " Were you wearing reflective clothing?" Have a good run but run like no one sees you. Because you know what happens when you assume anything.

Bill Cosby would ask if you were wearing clean underwear. Then he would proceed to tell you that whether they were clean when you started running or not, they wouldn't be after an incident like that, "because first you say it, then you do it!"

Good stuff, Trey. Just remember, "In your anger do not sin..." Eph 4:26

Love ya, Brother!

Marty - One word, "Ouch."

TA - What did I need reflective clothing for? There was an 8 foot reflective stop sign staring him in the face. :)

Robin - I needed that verse.

There's not much way of controlling that kind of situation. It's an automatic response. However, in this present culture, if someone runs through a Stop sign and hits you, regardless of the damage to you or his / her vehicle, it is obviously always your fault!

That you are okay (for which I'm thankful) makes the story funny! I think you handled it better than I might have ... just another reason I don't run.

Perfectly natural response, just be thankful it wasn’t Leah or one of your boys on the hood of that pickup. You may not have calmed down so easily. I think even though it was a natural response you still handled it well and was back in control of you emotions in a short amount of time. Thank God you were spared injury.

BTW- for many people that same situation would have escalated completely out of control. I see it on the news too often.

Perfectly natural response to being run over. good for you for continuing to run and beat the guy. Not natural to get up at 5am and run over 2 miles. :) Glad you are ok.

Well, I guess it can happen to anyone. I just became "that guy." I was picking up my daughter from school and watching traffic go by so I could pull out. Logic never told me to look forward before I went to pull out, so the guy who just happened to be crossing the exit there almost had to be scraped off of my hood! I immediately stopped, put my hands up, and mouthed, "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry."

That'll teach me to talk trash!

Now we know what to avoid. Glad you let us know before anyone else tried that.

Hey at least you were not hurt... Robin is correct too, with the verse she mentioned in Eph 4:26

It sounds like a scene from a movie, not real life. I think everyone has those kind of reactions in situations like that.

Trey, we are all human, and I believe getting angry or mad is normal. If the world wouldn't be the way it is, we wouldn't really have much to be angry about. I know when I read the paper and see stories about people hurting other people or children(especially children!), it ANGERS me. I can say I have a short temper, and I know it's something I need to work on. Just know that you are a GREAT individual, and pastors get angry, too ;) !

Don't fall under the "Daryl" catagory. Trust no one but yourself! (when it comes to cars)

My husband believes that all cars will stop for him when he is out running. I really pray that they do.

I, on the other hand, believe that no one will ever stop for me, and therefore I stop for pretty much everything, including passing squirrels.

I have also been known to shout reminders about stop signs to passing drivers. Someone has to tell them, right? :) Glad you weren't hurt.
