1)Put your time and energy toward that which is positive. Don't waste a single moment on negativity. 2)Realize that the opposite of love is actually fear. You can't be a good minister (or teacher, or anything else) if you do it because you "fear" what might happen if you don't. Do it because you love people and love what you do.

I have learned that the church has "programmed" itself out of business. We have made programs for this and that because people were not being who God has made us to be. We must continue to teach and grow in spiritual maturity (holiness). When we grow in holiness we will "be about our Father's business" making a difference for the cross everyday in many ways. Building up others is a most important part of ministry, not programming up. Each part of the body can function and will function when we are growing spiritually. Thanks for the great list Trey.

I agree...God should always be first in your life and then your family. God gave you the gift of Himself and gave you your family. That should always be your first priority. If we were not always learning when ministering and getting closer with God then I think we are doing something wrong.

I'm learning that God is able to reach through the messes I've made to make something glorious for himself. He's around every corner, behind every door, waiting to work through whatever comes his way.

To me, this takes tons of pressure off from trying to be a perfectionist. It's doesn't mean I get lazy and become unconcerned, but it does mean I can concentrate on the moment, and if I err along the way, God can even use that for good (Gen. 50).

Great words Trey, we all need to refresh and not burn out. And I think most importantly is not to make an "idol" out of our ministry (whether you are a Pastor, Elder, Deacon or Ministry Leader Lay Person)...we have to remind ourselves that it is never about us, BUT how it should always be about God and what His loved did for us...

#3 is a big one for both ministers and elders. Jesus never tried to "please" anyone and quite often, he did the opposite.

Stay close to God, your family, and your walk. Allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life and in the life of your church, even the ones who don't always agree with you.

Because of where I grew up and the teaching I heard for years, it took me a while (embarrassingly too long) to figure out it's better to build people up than to beat them up.

Good lessons. After 30 years in the pulpit, I'm now learning lessons from the other side. Particularly, just how tired people are at the end of a day and at the end of a week and how much of a sacrifice some of them are making just to show up, let alone be involved to the degree church staff always wants people involved! I think after these last three years of work on the outside, I would possibly make a better preacher.

We'll never know.

I'm learning to live with Christ. Learning to listen and let him speak to me. Allowing God to control my life, instead of me. At least, I think I control my life, but in reality its the illusion of control.
